Barbara Ferrari's Thoughts on Her Creative Process and Imagery

I never work from a plan. My creative process in my works on paper and my 4'X 4' oil paintings, springs from intuition and is developed through extensive experimentation. I have found that by having "no plan" my subconscious reveals itself. The tables and chairs in my work are

"stand-ins" for my relationships with others and with myself. The titles tell a story, giving deeper meaning to each piece.

Work by other artists which I gravitate to always manages to surprise me. There is something unexpected, unpredictable as well as strangely insightful. Approaching 70 years of age, I know that my art is rare in its capacity to surprise others with deeply personal content and technical innovation.

Technically, I create my monoprints by photographing interesting areas of earlier paintings and prints. The photographs are then enlarged and photocopied in color. Back at my studio, I tear, cut, collage, draw on, paint on, and roll ink on each photocopy until I get promising

"core images". These "core images" are then printed on beautiful paper and worked on again.

Each print becomes a unique monoprint.
